From There to Nowhere: A Band's Tale of the Open Road.
So here we are. It's been two months since this hopeful band of misfits left Colorado on a journey of exploration, awakening, and complete musical conquest. The hope was to just play music none stop from here to wherever we land, and just as all great stories, this one starts slow.
After years of service to the small mountain town of Manitou Springs, Colorado, five unlikely folks decided they needed something more. They were tired of the small stages and the small crowds! They were made for more, and so with a newfound sense of freedom these five eagerly left.
We started our journey by traveling up through Wyoming making our way slowly across the state. We had a old converted chevy van, packed to the brim with guitars, drums, speakers, and wires of all manors and functions. Along with the van we had an old beat up RV, allowing us the comforts of home between the propane-driven kitchen, the comfy futon, and the life-saving bathroom. There was one more vehicle to be added to our little convoy but being as how it was owned by our bass player (and seeing as how bass players live adventurous lives) that vehicle was unable to travel out with us until a later date. All we had now was miles of this:
Before I get ahead of myself, let me tell you, getting a group of people together to go around the country with no real plan besides music, isn't the easiest of undertakings. Especially if you want to or playing venues out there in the great vast something.
I give you, such a band: The Barefoot Family Caravan.
Eli, Sean, Skipper, Micah, and Kiera Lynn.
In order to try and effectively do any gigging on the road we knew we were gonna need to do a few things:
Record. See, we've each done at lot of things with music, and we had old videos and recordings from when we had been in different projects, but to nail down the sound we are offering to venues, we needed to record what we had.
Sean is the caravans keyboard and saxophone player. He's a very talented musician and composer, with experience spanning 15 years.
Skipper. An especially skilled guitarist and drummer for the band. He holds it down and keeps it real like no other. Without Skip, we'd prolly be loosing our minds. We found him on Manitou Avenue one day, and he never left our couch.
Kiera Lynn is a little lady with a POWERHOUSE voice! She plays unekele, she plays guitar, she plays drums, she'll take you to church and make you cry!
Micah, is the backbone of the rythm laying down those sweet, sweet bass lines. As well as trombone, Micah is an extremely technical mandolin player and knows his way around any and all types of music.
Eli, is a singer and guitarist for the band. Along with an array of other instruments under his belt, he also writes and composes his own originals.
That's the band. Presenting, for your entertainment, The Barefoot Family Caravan!!!
So, after recording, and getting our affairs in order we were of, destination; Oregon.
We made our way straight to Oregon, as we had decided that would be a good place to start our first leg of the journey. We made our way to a cool place in Oregon called Corvallis. Here we would remain for a few weeks as we got our bearings together. It was a pretty groovy place, you got a college, a punk rock scene, and some damn good tacos in the area. We hung out and made some friends, did some busking, had some ciders and really enjoyed our stay.
Kiera and I played an open mic down at this spot called Bombs Away Cafe.
And we settled down and made it out pretty homely while we were there.
And when we weren't out busking, we were out playing in the woods.
After a good long visit to Corvallis, we decided to move onward. We were goin' down south. We made our way to Grant's Pass, and hung out out with some friends over in the Umpqua Springs, we even ended up in Ashland, staying with an old friend of an old band mate. After some good jams, and some interesting busking we decided it was time to get out of the soon approaching cold. California was only 400 miles away. We did some busking and went on our way.
So here we find ourselves, in sunny California, finding what's next everyday. This was the first blog of this exodus but stay tuned and see what The B.F.C. Has to offer!
Until next time...
